Katja Schumann was born into one of the world’s oldest and most celebrated circus families. Founded in 1871, Circus Schumann was established in Denmark in 1891, where the name Schumann has become synonymous with Circus. Schumann made her first appearance in the ring as a ballerina on horseback at age 10. She went on to become an outstanding Haute-Ecole rider and one of the finest “liberty” horse trainers of her generation. In 1974, she won the La Dame du Cirque award at the International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo. In 1976, she received the Gold Medal at the Circus World Championship in London. Before joining Circus Flora, Schumann was a featured star in The Big Apple Circus. Most recently, she and her horse, Ushastik, toured Sweden for two months with the “Levade” Noble Horse Gala and were featured in her homeland at the Danish Warmblood Society’s annual stallion selection show in a demonstration of how to influence the quality of training of international Grand Prix dressage horses using traditional circus combined with classical methods.
