It all began on a trapeze suspended from a Madrone tree. Future trapezists Ben Wendel and Rachel Nehmer were biology students working together as laboratory partners - an unlikely beginning to a career in circus! After graduating from Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, the pair relocated to Seattle, where, since 2004 they have used the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts (SANCA) as the main headquarters for developing their vibrant and sensual duet on trapeze. They have been featured locally in Seattle for the past three years at the Moisture Festival, nationally on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” and internationally at the prestigious 29th Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in Paris. A spectator described their duet as “the human form actualizing its highest potential for no reason, other than to create a beautiful thing.” This summer marks Duo Madrona’s premiere appearance with Circus Flora.
